Sitia is a lively town with approximately 11.000 inhabitants. The district is famous for its considerable olive oil production and for the excellent quality of its olive oil and wines. There are numerous local festivals in traditional Cretan style held in villages throughout the summer, which are well worth attending, as well as cultural events in the town.

Sitia is a town that accepts the past and is longing for the modern. There you can sense the hidden magic and peacefulness mixed with life and vividness.

The nearby beaches of Kouremenos and Chiona are ideal for families with small children and have a fine selection of tavernas that serve delicious fresh fish. Kouremenos Beach is also good for windsurfing. Itanos Beach has soft sand and is ideal for snorkeling. The Palm Tree Beach in Vai, the only one of its kind in Europe, is a very popular beach due to its great beauty and the palm trees that offer shade from the sun.

Other Sitia Lassithi Beaches are Kato Zakros, Makrygialos, Xerokampos (with small bays with turquoise waters and argil for skin treatments). From Makrygialos you can take a tour boat to the isles of Chryssi and Koufonissi, which both have sandy beaches and azure waters, a truly exotic-like setting.
